Choosing a school
Westland has nearly 50 primary schools, spread over ten villages. Each school has its own atmosphere and its own way of working. Take the time to look around, then you will know which school suits your family.

How to go about it
1
Start in good time
Start looking around when your child is about 2 years old. That gives you plenty of time to visit schools before your registration period begins.
2
Visit schools
Most schools hold open days or give a tour. That is the best way to get a feel for the atmosphere.
3
Ask your questions
Ask about the daily schedule, the support and the childcare. There is no such thing as a silly question.
4
List your preferences
When registering you list three schools in order of preference. So visit a few.
What to look for during a visit?
✓The atmosphere in the school and in the classrooms
✓How teachers treat the children
✓The building and the outdoor space
✓What the school believes in and how that shows in the day
✓What the school offers besides the regular curriculum
✓How the school supports children who need extra help
Talk to other parents
Parents who already have a child at school often tell you the most. Ask around at the playgroup, at the childcare or in the neighbourhood. That way you hear how things work in practice.
